NCSC Announces Viz-a-thon Competition

The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) is hosting a virtual, multi-week contest to create a supportable, interactive, data visualization of the state court structure charts.  The Grand Prize for the winning entry is $5,000 USD and Runners-up will receive prizes totaling $3,500 USD.

The problem to be solved in the Viz-a-thon competition is to transform the current static, cumbersome-to-update court structure charts, into a tool that provides transparency, and ease of investigation into how the US state courts are structured and administered.

NCSC's State Court Structure Charts are one of the most referred to and cited resources for:

  • court professionals
  • academics
  • and journalists.

The timeline for the competition is:

September 20, 2018: Data drop: the start of the contest
September 20 - September 27, 2018: Virtual Q&A sessions
September 30, 2018: Participants submit final solutions
October 3, 2018: Finalists announced
October 4, 2018: Live broadcast of finalist presentations and judging
