At the recent Innovating Justice Forum, I had the great honor of meeting South African lawyer Robert de Rooy who created the idea of Comic Book Contracts to allow “an illiterate person to understand their” employment contract. While this is a technology blog, this is such a powerful idea I had to share it with our readers to think about in regard to both paper and online agreement systems. More below…
---
Robert was awarded third in the Innovating Justice Awards 2019 competition for his idea. His company’s website, https://creative-contracts.com/ describes how they created a contract that is “written in pictures”.
The website also shows their process of creating the illustrated contract by:
1. Improving the current legal agreement by improving the logic and structure of the contract
2. Develop the illustrations
3. And work with the parties to implement it by signing or signing online
For additional detail, Forbes has a good article on the subject here.
There was also a “Comic Book Contract Conference” that was held in December 2017 at the University of Western Australia. They have posted a lot of material on the subject at their conference website at https://www.comicbookcontracts.com/
And, this idea builds upon and implements the Design Thinking work that we have written about here on the CTB many times before at http://www.openlawlab.com/
Fantastic work. I recommend looking and considering these ideas as part of your future court technology and communications plans.
