We learned via the US Federal Courts newsletter and video about the new courthouse that opened in Mobile, Alabama.

The newsletter says:

“A new federal courthouse has been formally unveiled in Mobile, Alabama, featuring improved safety and access for the public and improvements in information technology.

The new home to the Southern District of Alabama is located next door to the John A. Campbell U.S. Courthouse, which is more than 80 years old.

As shown in this video, Chief Judge Kristi DuBose recalled that the new courthouse was 20 years in the planning. Speaking at a September dedication ceremony, she said, “Senior District Judge Charles Butler had a vision to build a modern and secure courthouse to serve the people of the Southern District of Alabama.”

The new building has dedicated halls and elevators for defendants and prisoners. In the Campbell courthouse, judges, inmates, and the public shared the same elevators and hallways. New courtrooms all are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The final phase of construction – renovating the Campbell building – will be complete by 2020.”
