Webinar: How to Incorporate Plain Language into Court Forms, Websites, and Other Materials

The National Association for Court Management, in partnership with the Self-represented Litigation Network (SRLN), presented its third webinar of 2017 on November 29, 2017.

The event description noted that "plain language is recognized as an essential best practice in the provision of access to justice. The concept is often described as communication your audience can understand the first time they hear or read it.  It becomes an especially important consideration for courts when creating forms, instructions, website content and other guidance materials for the public and self-represented litigants."

The webinar taught aspects of the concepts of plain language and its usefulness as well as see how it is used in other fields. 

"Panelists from the Harvard Access to Justice Lab, OpenAdvocate, and the New York State Courts will discuss challenges to implementation, provide specific before and after examples, and showcase easy to use tools to assist in the development of plain language resources.  Panelists will provide audience members with methods to evaluate plain language resources developed in their home jurisdictions and draw parallels to other areas in which plain language can help courts communicate effectively with users."
